Innovative, Whimsical, Functional, Purposeful – Novelties from Salone 2024
18 June 2024, Singapore—Every year, the design world goes into a tizzy because of the novelties launched during the world’s largest furniture fair – Salone del Mobile. In its 62nd edition, the 2024 event offered a tantalising array of furniture pieces, lighting designs and other home décor accessories from many reputable brands. The gargantuan furniture event attracts an international audience, including architects, decorators, interior designers, trade people, and journalists.
W. Atelier’s range of brands showcased many interesting and innovative furniture and lighting pieces. Here’s a summary of the new and notable objects from each brand.
CASSINA
Held at the Cassina showroom in Milan, the space was rife with colour and offered head-turning designs at every corner. With its storied history, Cassina dug into its archives to revive some notable designs.
"The Cassina Perspective 2024" was the theme for Cassina. It is about the company's philosophy, which believes it must constantly evolve and stay true to its pioneering attitude and commitment to innovation.
Key pieces include the "Cornaro" sofa, designed by Carlo Scarpa in 1973. It sees the light of day with new materials and an intriguing colourway. The rigorous burgundy-hued wooden structure, contrasting with the baby blue-hued upholstered backrest, seat, and armrest, helps create an imposing, eye-catching structure.
The famous mid-century husband-and-wife design duo Charles & Ray Eames' "Galaxy" chandelier materialises. Initially designed in 1940, this luminaire's design was inspired by gathering components from the automotive industry to produce this showstopping creation. Cassina's research and innovation allow this masterpiece to go into proper production because back in the post-war era, the couple faced many technological limitations. "Galaxy" comprises 36 light rods of varying lengths in matte black or polished aluminium finish. Lastly, French architect Charlotte Perriand's "Indochine chaise lounge" gets a 2024 production version. Initially designed in 1943, the chair was crafted in rattan instead of tubular metal, which was hard to find during wartime. Cassina is now manufacturing it in tubular steel, honouring the designer's original intention.
Cassina continued to honour creations from the posthumous works of Gaetano Pesce, whose recent passing in April 2024 shook the design world. This time, it pays homage to this great design work by reissuing the "Notturno A New York" (i.e. The New York skyline) sofa from 1980. The new edition three-seat sofa comprises nine skyscraper elements on its upholstery design, serving as armrests and seats, while the middle seat gets a backrest designed like a large moon. The sofa is made from recycled PET fibre, and only a unique series of 50 pieces will be made.
LEMA
Lema's 2024 collection focused on the theme of "Casa Lema" – a blend of welcoming atmospheres that promote conviviality. With a space designed by Piero Lissoni, the various zones offered furniture pieces that become protagonists created with a “Made In Italy” philosophy in mind. Notable pieces include the "Ares" sofa (above) designed by Roberto Lazzeroni, whose significant high backrest wraps the seat with its curved shape in a majestic form. There is also the "Omega" lounge armchair, whose aesthetic is inspired by furniture from the 1950s. Its rigorous, minimal frame supports a slightly padded molded shell clad in leather.
VITRA
Swiss-made furniture brand Vitra showcased two products: British-based designer-duo Barber Osgerby designed the “Mikado” dining chair (above), offering a comfortable upholstered backrest and armrest shell fixed on sturdy oak or steel legs. Meanwhile, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis re-imagined the iconic “Panton” cantilevered chair designed by Verner Panton by offering seven new colours. She also re-imagined the “Visiona” stool designed in 1970 by Panton by offering seven new fabric colours.
SieMatic
As one of the leaders in luxury designer kitchen systems, German-made SieMatic launched the new generation S2 line featuring handle-less doors and drawers paired with innovative features such as SecretSpace and SecretService.
Binova
For Eurocucina 2024, Binova unveiled a distinctive kitchen design line called “Bluna.” The system comes with integrated stone handles. This solution boasts doors in lead-lacquered MDF embellished with elegant handles in Silver Root Opaco stoneware. The warm shades of the island are also reflected in the wardrobe, characterised by the Stone handles integrated into the doors. Stoneware becomes the protagonist of Binova hobs; in the new version, Bluna does away with hotplates and uses an induction system directly integrated into the material. So, no more hobs, but just one single-material base.
LUALDI
Founded in 1859, Lualdi is an illustrious design company focusing on interior doors, custom furniture and contract furniture. Its 2024 collection houses new patterns, finishes, and colours designed by Piero Lissoni. There are chromatic features where new blue and burgundy come alive on new milled wood patterns. The Quadra collection focuses on moving geometries, while Chocolat XL creates larger regular milled squares on wooden surfaces. W. Atelier is proud to be the official distributor of Lualdi.
